Orchard Fields: From Roman Fort to Community Parkland

Orchard Fields is one of Malton’s most significant historic sites and valued community spaces. As custodian owner, Fitzwilliam Malton Estate is proud to care for the land that is the town’s former Roman fort, protected as a nationally important 'Scheduled Monument'.

Scheduled Monuments are archaeological sites of national importance that receive legal protection, helping to safeguard their heritage for future generations under the supervision of Historic England.

Situated on the north bank of the River Derwent, the fort stood at the heart of Roman Malton. Its defensive earthworks remain visible across Orchard Fields, providing a tangible link to the settlement that developed around the fort and extended south of the river into Norton. Visitors can discover more about this fascinating history through Malton Museum's interpretation boards at Orchard Fields.

Working in partnership with Malton Town Council and North Yorkshire Council, the Estate helps to maintain Orchard Fields as clean, safe, and welcoming public parkland. The site is not only an important historic landmark, but also a much-valued green space for residents and visitors, attracting more than 12,600 visits in August alone!

With huge thanks to our drone pilots Deaglan Hunter Blair and William Hogg for this super footage!
