PARTNERSHIP WORKING BRINGS SPRING BOOST FOR MALTON

Partnership working is bringing a spring boost to Malton, with the town’s business community, local councils and major property owner Fitzwilliam Estates all working together to help enhance the appearance of the town.

A team of community workers has been working to remove weeds and other vegetation from the town’s pavements. It is hoped that this clean start will encourage both the District Council and the town traders to keep up the good work in order to deter further weed growth. In addition, the Fitzwilliam Estate has offered at nominal cost the services of an elevating platform to clean out gutters in the town centre.

Malton Town Council is preparing to add a splash of attractive floral colour to the town by fitting hanging flower baskets to the town centre street display columns. The Fitzwilliam Estate will also be launching a matching scheme for its retail properties in the town .

North Yorkshire County Council is currently replacing many of the 40 year old lamp standards. Those in the Market Place and other sensitive areas will be replaced with a period style in keeping with the market town’s shopping area . NYCC is also hard at work replacing the Newgate bus shelters with a more attractive design and looking at the future needs for coach unloading bays.

In a move to keep heavy goods vehicles from Malton’s main streets, The Fitzwilliam Estate is continuing to encourage retailers to make use of rear servicing wherever possible. This helps remove the number of heavy vehicles unloading on street front pavements, and so reduces the problems caused to pedestrians and traffic alike.

Roddy Bushell, estate manager at Fitzwilliam Estates says “It’s good to know that Malton is doing many of the right things to combat competition from the larger retail centres. However, it is a relentless battle to ensure that the town continues to prosper into the future. It just isn’t possible for traders and those of us charged with encouraging trade in the town to rest on our laurels.

“It is only with the combined efforts of all who rely on the town for their livelihood that significant advances will be made, and the future position of Malton as the principal trading town in the area secured.”
